Preview

Georgia Tech is returning to to Dublin where they beat Boston College by a score of 17-13 back in 2016. This will be the first time Florida State will playing outside the United States for the first time in school history.

The Notre Dame Irish won 42-3 versus Navy in the 2023 Aer Lingus College Football Classic at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland. It was a frustrating game to watch for Navy fans, and a preview of what was to come for the rest of the season. Unfortunately for Notre Dame, they might have peaked in Week Zero.

The Aer Lingus College Football Classic is played at Aviva Stadium, which also held the 2012 Emerald Isle Classic between the Notre Dame Irish versus the Navy Midshipmen. It is built on the site of the former Lansdowne Road stadium, which was demolished in 2007, and where Boston College played in 1988. It is home to the Irish Rugby Football Union and the Football Association of Ireland.

Florida State

  • 13-1 Overall in 2023
  • 8-0 in the ACC in 2023
  • 8-6 ATS in 2023

The Seminoles have to replace a ton of talent from last year’s team that ran the table during the regular season. Starting quarterback Jordan Travis, leading rusher Trey Benson and star wide receivers Johnny Wilson and Keon Coleman have all moved on to the NFL.

Mike Norvell will turn over the offense to Oregon State grad transfer DJ Uiagalelei who has plenty of experience both at Clemson and at Corvallis. The betting markets have him priced at 25-1 to win the Heisman, which is an indication that expectations are fairly high. He steps behind one of the best offensive lines in the conference, and there is still plenty of talent in the receiving corps.

The Seminoles defense was the only unit in the nation that held opponents under 50 percent passing last season. They lost several key players, but turned to the transfer portal to reload. Incoming are Georgia’s Marvin Jones Jr, West Virginia’s Tomiwa Durojaiye, Oregon State’s Sione Lolohea and Alabama’s Earl Little Jr.

Georgia Tech

  • 7-6 Overall in 2023
  • 5-3 in the AAC in 2023
  • 8-5 ATS in 2023

The Yellow Jackets exceeded all expectations in the first season under head coach Brent Key. Georgia Tech ranked 3rd in the ACC in total offense in 2023, and they bring back four of five starting offensive lineman and starting quarterback Haynes King.

Running back Jamaal Haynes had 1,059 yards rushing averaging 6.1 yards per carry last seasons. He’s back along with the top two wide receivers and starting tight end Brett Seither.

While the offense is in good shape, improvements will need to be made on defense in 2024. New defensive coordinator Tyler Santucci will implement a new system, with much of the same personnel that underachieved last year.

Relevant Trends

  • The Seminoles are 1-8 ATS in their last 9 versus Georgia Tech.
  • The Seminoles are 19-1 SU in their last 20 games.
  • The total has gone OVER in 13 of Georgia Tech’s last 18 games.
  • The Seminoles are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games played in August.
  • The Yellow Jackets are 1-5 SU in their last 6 games played in week 1.

PREDICTION: FLORIDA STATE 27 – GEORGIA TECH 24

The historical trends seem to suggest that Florida State should win this game, but is unlikely to cover as a double digit favorite. With all the new pieces on offense for the Seminoles, it seems like some growing pains should be expected, and they might need a few weeks to get on the same page. The Yellow Jackets have the advantage of bringing back almost everybody on offense, and they might be able to do enough to make this game interesting. We would recommend taking the points here with Georgia Tech.

Florida State means business in 2024. They will own the ACC and you all are gonna see! They will spank the pants off the Yellow Jackets in Ireland. Take that to the bank.

Doc Rivers has never had the stomach for building an NBA team. You want him to coach? No worries. He would coach in the East (Boston and Philadelphia), coach in the West (Los Angeles Clippers) and coach somewhere in between (Milwaukee).

The Longhorns should beat the pants off this Rams team, and if they really wanted to they could cover a 36-point spread. We expect them to dominate the first half, but when you look up at the schedule and see a road game at Michigan the following Saturday
