South Florida Bulls vs UTSA Roadrunners Betting Preview
Start time: Thursday, October 8, 2026, 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN), Alamodome, San Antonio, TX
Two 4-1 teams meet on Thursday night in a South Florida vs UTSA matchup that could shape the American Conference title race. UTSA is 1-0 in league play after a 16-14 escape at Rice, while South Florida fell to 1-1 with a 17-13 home loss to Temple, its first defeat under first-year head coach Brian Hartline. Both teams are playing on just five days of rest.
The market has moved since the open. UTSA has gone from -6.5 to -7, and the total has dropped from 55.5 to 49.5. The series is tied 1-1: UTSA won 49-21 in San Antonio in 2023, and South Florida won 55-23 in Tampa last November. This Bulls team looks nothing like that one, though, after quarterback Byrum Brown and a long list of starters followed former coach Alex Golesh to Auburn.
There is extra spice as well. Hartline questioned this week how the Alamodome gets so loud given the crowd sizes, and UTSA answered by selling $9 tickets, a nod to his old Ohio State jersey number.

South Florida Betting Preview
South Florida has won with defense. The Bulls have allowed just 14.0 points per game against FBS opponents, beating FIU 19-9, Army 28-24 and Bowling Green 14-6 before the Temple loss. The offense is the problem. Quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr. leads a unit that ranks 110th nationally at 344.2 yards per game and has topped 19 points against an FBS team only once.
Slow starts are a pattern. The Bulls have failed to score a first-half touchdown in three of five games and were scoreless through three quarters at Bowling Green. Hartline said this week the issue is “consistency of execution on offense,” and he also flagged drive-killing penalties after the Temple game. That is a concern heading into a loud dome.

UTSA Betting Preview
UTSA’s record is better than its form. The Roadrunners have beaten UT Rio Grande Valley 45-16, Texas State 31-26, Colorado State 59-45 and Rice 16-14, with the only loss coming 30-6 at No. 1 Texas. Head coach Jeff Traylor was blunt this week: “Our offense has not been near what it’s capable of being.” He credited the defense, run game and special teams for keeping the team afloat.
The offensive line is the concern. Left guard Ben Rios is a game-time decision, and left tackle Jonah Miller is still working back from preseason hand surgery. No UTSA receiver has reached 300 yards through five games, with quarterback Owen McCown spreading the ball between DJ Allen, Mekhi Anderson, AJ Wilson and David Amador. On defense, linebacker Darion White was named American Conference Defensive Player of the Week after the Rice win.
The Alamodome remains the big edge. Traylor is 35-5 at home and 25-1 there against conference opponents.
- Recent form: 4-1 SU, but just 22 total points in the last two games away from home
- Home record: 2-0 SU in 2026, averaging 52 points per game at the Alamodome
- Head-to-head: won the last meeting in San Antonio 49-21 in 2023
- Injury report: LG Ben Rios (game-time decision), LT Jonah Miller (hand, limited)

Summary & Best Bets
This South Florida vs UTSA betting preview points to a lower-scoring game than the series history suggests. South Florida’s defense travels, but its offense has struggled to finish drives and now faces crowd noise on a short week. UTSA’s attack has been inconsistent, and its patched-up offensive line faces one of the better defensive fronts in the league. Expect UTSA to lean on its run game and defense, and expect a tight, grinding game into the fourth quarter.
Play on: Under 49.5 points
Lean: South Florida +7. In a game projected in the low 40s, a full touchdown is a lot of points, and the Bulls have not lost by more than four all year.
Predicted score: UTSA 23, South Florida 19

Fun Prop Bets:
- First Half Under: South Florida has gone without a first-half touchdown in three of five games.
- South Florida Team Total Under 21.5: The Bulls have cleared 19 points against an FBS opponent only once.
- UTSA Team Total Under 28.5: The Roadrunners managed just 16 at Rice behind a reshuffled offensive line.
- Will Henderson III Anytime Touchdown: UTSA’s back opened the season with a 100-yard game and is the safest route to the end zone.
