Boston Celtics vs Detroit Pistons Betting Preview
Start time: Tuesday, October 20, 2026, 3:00 p.m. ET at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit (NBC/Peacock)
The 2026-27 NBA season tips off with the most interesting matchup on the board. Last season’s top two teams in the Eastern Conference meet in Detroit at 3:00 p.m. ET, the first game of the league’s Opening Day tripleheader. This Celtics vs Pistons betting preview has everything you need for the opener: odds, trends, injuries and our best bets.
The Pistons went 60-22 last season, the best record in the East and Detroit’s first 60-win season since 2005-06. Along the way they won 13 straight games, which tied the franchise record. The Celtics finished second at 56-26, four games back, even though Jayson Tatum missed most of the year while recovering from his Achilles tear.
Both teams want to make up for disappointing playoff exits. Detroit lost a seven-game conference semifinal to Cleveland. Boston led Philadelphia 3-1 in the first round, then lost the series in seven games, with Tatum sidelined for Game 7.
The head-to-head history favors Detroit. The Pistons won three of four meetings last season, and that 3-1 split decided the race for the top seed. The four results: Detroit 119-113 on October 26, Boston 117-114 on November 26, Detroit 112-105 on December 15, and Detroit 104-103 on MLK Day.
Boston also has a slow-start history to shake. The Celtics lost last year’s opener 117-116 at home to the 76ers, started 0-3 and sat at 8-8 in early November.
The market can’t separate these teams. Most books opened Boston as a 1-point or 1.5-point road favorite. Since then, several books have flipped Detroit to a 1-point or 1.5-point favorite, and the total has moved between 221.5 and 222.5. When the number crosses zero like that, the moneyline and the spread are close to the same bet.

Boston Celtics Betting Preview
The Celtics made the biggest move of the offseason. They traded Jaylen Brown to Philadelphia in a deal that brought back 36-year-old Paul George. They also signed center Mitchell Robinson away from the Knicks and added veteran guard Mike Conley.
Boston will need George to stay healthy. He played only 78 of 164 regular-season games across his two seasons in Philadelphia. He averaged 17.3 points on 39.2% from three last year but scored just 9.0 points per game in two preseason appearances. George told The Boston Globe that Boston has brought out a passion in him that had been buried.
Tatum is the bigger story, and the preseason signs were strong. He averaged 21.0 points on 47.2% shooting and 38.9% from three as Boston went 4-0. The Celtics led the league in exhibition scoring at 126.0 points per game and also posted the best defensive numbers of the preseason. George was impressed with what he saw from his new teammate: “He’s explosive, he looks strong, he’s shooting the heck out of it.”
Last season, Boston was one of the best teams in the league against the spread at 51-31. The Celtics were even better on the road at 28-13 ATS. They also played a lot of low-scoring games, going 32-50 on totals, and the under hit in 25 of their 41 road games.
Head-to-head: Boston went 1-3 straight up and 2-2 ATS against Detroit last season. The under hit in three of the four games.
Celtics injury report:
- Devin Carter (G): Out, illness
- Everyone else, including Jayson Tatum, Paul George, Derrick White, Payton Pritchard and Mitchell Robinson, is available
Projected starters: Derrick White, Paul George, Jayson Tatum, Jordan Walsh/Sam Hauser, Mitchell Robinson
Detroit Pistons Betting Preview
The Pistons bring back almost the same team that won 60 games, and that continuity is their biggest edge on opening night.
Cade Cunningham made All-NBA First Team after averaging roughly 24 points and 10 assists. Jalen Duren made All-NBA Third Team and signed a long-term extension after a contract standoff that delayed his start to training camp. Ausar Thompson, Detroit’s best perimeter defender, also signed an extension.
Detroit’s offseason additions were aimed at better spacing:
- John Collins (sign-and-trade from the Clippers)
- Isaiah Joe (trade with the Thunder)
- Taurean Prince
- Ebuka Okorie (No. 17 pick)
Defense is still the identity. Last season the Pistons forced a league-high 16.9 turnovers per game, held opponents to the third-lowest field goal percentage in the league (44.3%) and had the best defensive rating in the East.
Coach J.B. Bickerstaff, last season’s Coach of the Year favorite, says his team isn’t paying attention to the outside noise: “People’s words have no impact on us.” Cunningham welcomed the tough opener: “You want to play against the best.”
The Pistons went 3-1 in the preseason. Against the spread, they were less dependable than Boston last season, going 25-24 ATS at home including the playoffs. They were also a losing bet as bigger favorites, covering only 11 of 26 games when favored by 3.5 points or more through January. That matters less here, because Detroit is no more than a 1.5-point favorite anywhere.
Head-to-head: Detroit won three of four meetings last season, including both games at Little Caesars Arena.
Pistons injury report:
- No injuries listed
Projected starters: Cade Cunningham, Duncan Robinson, Ausar Thompson, John Collins, Jalen Duren

Summary & Best Bets
On paper the Celtics are deeper than people think, but we’re not ready to lay points with a team breaking in a new rotation on the road. Detroit is also bringing back the same group that beat Boston three times last year. Swapping Jaylen Brown for a 36-year-old George shouldn’t make Boston the road favorite against last season’s No. 1 seed. We’ll take the home team at a near pick’em.
The total points the same way. Opening night games tend to be defensive grinds, and these were two of the top four scoring defenses in the league last season. Detroit’s turnover pressure should also keep Boston’s new-look offense out of rhythm.
