The blueprint for building a successful program in college football has always revolved around recruiting, developing talent and if you are lucky in your third or fourth season you will have enough talent and depth to compete for a conference title or even a national championship.
Curt Cignetti broke the mold, taking over an Indiana team that won three games the previous year, winning 11 games and making the College Football Playoffs in his first season with the Hoosiers. His recipe for success included cherry picking the top talent from the roster at his previous school, and bringing them along for the ride.
Heading into 2026 we see this formula being employed at Auburn, Memphis, Penn State, Virginia Tech and UCLA. The Bruins took it to the next level, bringing in Bob Chesney from the same school where Indiana found Curt Cignetti.
Cal also hired a new coach in Tosh Lupoi, who began his coaching career at Berkeley two decades ago. These two teams are each expected to take a step forward this season, and the bookmakers have this game as a virtual coin flip.

Of all the players that followed Chesney to UCLA, none are expected to make a bigger impact than Wayne Knight. The senior running back led the Sun Belt with 1,373 yards and nine touchdowns with James Madison last year. Nico Iamaleava is back at quarterback, and he should have more talent around him than he did in 2025.
The former five star recruit showed promise at Tennessee, but left the team over a dispute over his NIL deal. The decision ended up costing him a fortune in the end, and he threw for just 1.938 yards, 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions in his first year with the bruins.
Of all the teams trying to replicate the success Cignettis has had at Indiana, the Bruins might be in the best position to do it.

Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele was one of the top passers in the ACC in his first year as a starter for the Bears. He threw for 3,454 yards, 18 touchdowns and nine interceptions helping Cal get to a bowl game last year.
He will have a trio of high dollar transfers at receiver coming over from Rutgers, Oregon and Ohio. They also brought in a pair of capable running backs from Washington and UTEP. California is projected to make another bowl game this season, with a regular season win total set at 6.5.
Tosh Lupoi and defensive coordinator Michael Hutchings will bring in a new attitude on defense, and they may have one of the best secondaries in the ACC.

While the Bruins have history on their side winning seven of the last 10 meetings between the two schools, California has home field advantage, and statistically the better quarterback. We are expecting the Bruins to be better under Chesney, but until proven otherwise we don’t expect to see anyone do what Cignetti has done at Indiana in our lifetimes. It remains to be seen if Nico Iamaveala is capable of living up to his potential. We have Cal winning by a touchdown.
