New York Giants vs Tennessee September 11, 2022 @ Nashville TN

Opening Betting Odds

Spread: Giants +6.5, Titans -6.5
Moneyline: Giants +240, Titans -280
Total: 44

Preview

The Titans come into the 2022 season as defending AFC South Champions, but it’s the Colts that are the favorite to win the division this season. Tennessee finished last year with a 12-5 record despite losing Derrick Henry halfway through the season. Half of the Titans 12 wins came in games decided by three points or fewer.

The Giants fired Joe Judge after finishing dead last in the NFC East with a record of 4-13 overall. Brian Daboll takes over, and the former offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills should be able to get the best out of Daniel Jones. The bookmakers are expecting the Giants to improve on last seasons record, coming into the season with a projected win total of 7.5 (Fanduel).

New York Giants

  • 4-13 overall in 2021
  • 1-5 in the NFC East in 2021
  • 6-11 against the spread in 2021

The Giants dealt with a ton of injuries last year, most notably quarterback Daniel Jones missing six games and running back Saquon Barkley running for just 593 yards on 162 carries in another injury plagued season.

Saquon Barkley has been one of the most disappointing players in the NFL since his impressive rookie campaign. Two years removed from an ACL injury, he enters a contract year. If he’s lacked motivation over the last three years, he has everything to gain if he can perform here in 2022.

He will be running behind an improved offensive line after the Giants selected Evan Neal out of Alabama in the first round of the draft. The #5 overall pick Kayvon Thibodeaux will give them one of the league’s best pass rushing duos.

The Giants were far more competitive when Daniel Jones was in the lineup last year, going 0-6 after his injury. All six of those losses came in games decided by double digits.

Tennessee Titans

  • 12-5 overall in 2021
  • 5-1 in the AFC South in 2021
  • 10-8 against the spread in 2021

Derrick Henry was on pace to lead the NFL in rushing for a third consecutive season last year, but he went down with an injury after playing eight games. The Titans managed to win six of their final nine games without Henry, but it’s naive to think that they can be successful without another big year from their best player.

The fact that Pro Football Focus ranks the Titans offensive line 27th in the NFL does not bode well for a 28 year old running back coming off an injury. Trading away their top wide receiver, and declining numbers from quarterback Ryan Tannehill aren’t exactly positive signs either.

The Titans will be a lot younger at wide receiver with Julio Jones and AJ Brown gone. Rookie Kyle Phillips is getting rave reviews early in training camp, and first round pick Treylon Burks has received praise from his quarterback: “Making plays like that does a lot for building confidence from a quarterback like myself,” Tannehill said. “Knowing what you’re going to over there. If he wins consistently and makes plays like that, it gives you a lot of confidence to go his direction.”

Relevant Trends

  • The Giants are 0-6 ATS in their last six games as an underdog.
  • The Giants are 0-5 ATS in their last five road games.
  • The Giants are 6-13 ATS in their last 19 games in September.
  • The Titans are 1-5 ATS in their last six games in Week 1.
  • The under is 21-6-1 in the Giants last 28 games overall.

Prediction: New York Giants 21 – Tennessee Titans 24

We have the Titans getting the win, but failing to cover as a big favorite in Week 1. There is plenty of reason to expect the Giants to be far more competitive in 2022 than they were a year ago, and it’s going to be very hard for the Titans to match last season.

Word out of Giants camp is that if Danny Dimes doesn’t turn things around it will be Tyrod Taylor starting against the Titans in Week 1. What kind of prediction can you make on that game, I guess it would bring the total way down. I am certainly skeptical that the GMen will be any better in 2022 than they were in 2021. I still think Tennessee gets the win and cover here in their home opener.

Saquan Barkley should have a good year and possibly a big week 1. Let’s go Giants !
