Preview

This will be the third time in four seasons that these teams meet in the opening game of the season. The previous two meetings were both in Hawaii, and Stanford won 37-24 in 2023, but the Rainbow Warriors won it with a walk off field goal in overtime last season.

Stanford ranked dead last in the ACC in pass defense in 2025, and they will be tested against a Hawaii offense that ranked first in the Mountain West in passing offense last year. This could be a shootout if the Cardinal can get their ground game working.

Hawaii Betting Preview

9-4 Overall in 2025
5-3 in the MW in 2025
9-3 ATS in 2025

The Rainbow Warriors have improved every year under head coach Timmy Chang, and getting to nine wins last year was something that seemed unthinkable just a few years prior.

They have a star quarterback in Micah Alejado who threw for a Mountain West best 24 touchdowns last season. He threw for 274 yards and three TDs in a 35-31 win over California in the Hawaii Bowl on Christmas Day.

The defense only returns three starters, and a handful of new faces on the offensive line might give reason for concern. Overall this team should be in good shape heading into 2026.

Stanford Betting Preview

4-8 Overall in 2025
3-5 in the ACC in 2025
5-7 ATS in 2025

The Cardinal were looking to make a big hire at head coach, but they ended up turning to Tavita Pritchard who spent a dozen years with the program before spending the last couple seasons in the NFL as the QB coach for the Washington Redskins. He’s a former Stanford quarterback (2006-2009) but he’s never been a head coach at any level.

The Cardinal bring back 10 starters, and almost their entire offensive line from last year. They should have a solid ground game with sophomore running back Micah Ford who ran for 643 yards and four TDs starting nine games last year.

Michigan transfer Davis Warren is expected to be the starting quarterback in 2026. He has three years of experience with the Wolverines, starting nine games in the 2024 season.

Relevant Betting Trends

The Rainbow Warriors are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 overall.
The Cardinal are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 overall.
The Over is 5-2 in the Cardinal’s last 7 overall.
The Under is 6-3 in the Rainbow Warrior’s last 9 overall.
The Rainbow Warriors are 7-12-1 ATS in August since 2000.

BETTING PREDICTION: HAW 24 – STAN 27

These two teams appear to be very evenly matched. While we expect Stanford to be better than they were last year, it seems like its asking a lot for them to cover a 3.5 point spread against a team that has an established quarterback and a star wide receiver that won nine games last year. The value might be taking the points with the underdog, and as far as the total goes this looks like a game where both teams score their share of points.
