Preview
As the host nation for the 2024 European Championships, Germany automatically qualifies for the competition. They will play their first match at Allianz Arena in Munich (the home stadium of Bayern Munich).
The Germans are coming off a poor performance at World Cup 2022, failing to advance from the group stages for the second time in four years. Fans will be encouraged by the fact that they come into the tournament off wins over France and Netherlands.
Scotland comes in off an impressive showing in their qualifying matches, punching their ticket to the tournament with two matches to spare.
Germany
- 1-2-1 Last EURO in 2020
- 0-0-0 EURO Qualifiers (auto bid)
- 2-2-1 Last 5 matches
Germany has won the European Championship three times, and they have qualified for the Semi Finals nine times. Their last first place finish came in England in 1996. Since winning the World Cup in 2014, Germany has struggled in international competition.
They will be a -250 favorite to win Group A, while Switzerland is priced at +550 and Hungary is priced at +700. Scotland is projected to finish last, priced at +800. Even a lackluster showing from the host nation shouldn’t prevent them from advancing to the knockout round.
Scotland
- 0-1-2 Last EURO in 2020
- 5-1-2 EURO Qualifiers
- 0-3-2 Last 5 matches
Scotland has appeared in three European Championships, and has never advanced from the group stages. They have two wins, two draws and five losses in nine matches in those three tournaments. The Scots scored five goals and conceded 10.
This squad showed some offensive prowess in their qualifying matches, scoring 17 times in eight contests. Scott McTominay scored seven goals, leading Scotland in scoring during the qualifying round.
Relevant Trends
- Scotland has conceded 14 goals in their last five matches.
- Germany is 3-0-1 in their last four versus Scotland.
- The total has gone over in three straight head to head meetings.
- Both teams have scored in each of the last four meetings.
- Scotland scored 17 goals in eight qualifying matches.
PREDICTION: GERMANY 3, SCOTLAND 1
We aren’t going to predict a clean sheet, and the both teams to score prop appears to be a good bet as these teams have each scored in all four of the last four meetings. Germany is heavily favored, and their quality should prevail in the end. Opening the tournament against the host nation is a tough ask for Scotland, and Germany should run away with this in front of the home crowd at Allianz Arena. The first half might be close, but the Germans will break down the Scots in the second half.
