Preview
The NFL Preseason kicks off on Thursday August 3, when the New York Jets play the Cleveland Browns in the Hall of Fame Game. Bettors will be lining up to get action on the game, despite the fact that the majority of the starters are unlikely to see the field. Low scores have been the trend in recent years, and the total for this game sits at 33.5. Five of the last seven Hall of Fame games have gone under that number.
Both these coaches play to win in the preseason, and the Jets are undefeated in exhibition games under Robert Saleh the last two seasons. The Browns are 4-2 since Kevin Stefanski took over in 2021.
New York Jets
- 7-10 overall in 2022
- 2-4 in the AFC East in 202
- 8-9 against the spread in 2022
Expectations are high for the Jets this season after they acquired future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the off-season. Don’t expect to see the veteran under center on Thursday in Canton. We expect to see the likes of Zach Wilson, Tim Boyle and Chris Streveler. The fourth stringer Streveler had himself an outstanding pre-season in 2022, throwing for 277 yards, five touchdowns and one INT on 24-of-33 passing.
Despite his stellar play he was cut prior to Week 1 of the regular season. Zach Wilson only played in one pre-season game last year, throwing for 23 yards and an INT on 3-of-5 passing. Tim Boyle comes over from Chicago, and he and Sreveler will be battling for the third string quarterback spot.
Cleveland Browns
- 7-10 overall in 2022
- 3-3 in the AFC North 2022
- 8-9 against the spread in 2022
The Browns are not the favorite to win their division, but with an elite quarterback and running back duo playing behind one of the league’s best offensive lines they have all the tools to make some noise this season. While they have had success under Kevin Stefanski in the pre-season, their depth at quarterback doesn’t look all that impressive.
We expect a bounce back season for the controversial Deshaun Watson, but the Browns might be in trouble with Josh Dobbs, Kellen Mond and Dorian Thompson-Robinson as options to back up Watson.
Relevant Trends
- The Jets are 7-2 ATS in their last nine meetings.
- The favorite is 10-2 ATS in their last 12 meetings.
- The under is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
- The under is 6-1 in Browns last seven games overall.
- The under is 7-0 in the Jets last seven versus the AFC.
Prediction: New York Jets 17 – Cleveland Browns 13
Expect both teams to take their time and burn up a lot of clock. Robert Saleh is 5-0 straight up in pre-season games so far in his career, and you have to think he’s playing to win here. He has a solid group of quarterbacks that should all be capable of running the offense. Cleveland’s second, third and fourth string quarterbacks lack experience, and the Browns better hope that Watson stays healthy this season. We believe the bookmakers have the wrong team favored here.

This preview and prediction is slanted toward the Jets, but let us not forget that this game is in Canton Ohio. I think you need to give Cleveland a little more respect. This team is going to have a lot to prove in 2023. Stefanski will want to win this game and my money is on the Browns.
