Preview
The Sooners won by a score of 73-0 at home versus Arkansas State in Week 1 of the 2023 season, and they are favored by six scores in Week 1 versus Temple.
The bookmakers are not expecting this Temple team to be competitive, setting their season win total at just 2.5. Temple is priced at 125-1 to win the American Athletic Conference, projected to finish last.
Oklahoma is 40-1 to win the SEC compared to Texas priced at just 3-1. The Sooners season win total is set at 7.5, as they face one of the toughest schedules in the country.
Temple
- 3-9 Overall in 2023
- 1-7 in the AAC in 2023
- 3-9 ATS in 2023
The Owls are coming off three straight seasons winning just three games. Improvement is going to be difficult after their roster was decimated by the transfer portal. Of all the players that left, none will be missed more than starting QB E.J. Warner. The leading passer in the AAC in 2023 transferred to Rice.
The offensive line was a big problem last season, and reports out of spring practice don’t give any reason for optimism. Temple ranked dead last in the conference in rushing, averaging 96 yards per game.
If you are looking for good news, don’t look at the defense. This unit forced the fewest turnovers in the FBS last season. Leading tackler Jordan Magee was selected by the Washington Commanders in the NFL Draft, leaving a hole that won’t be easy to fill.
Oklahoma
- 10-3 Overall in 2023
- 7-2 in the BIG12 in 2023
- 8-5 ATS in 2023
The Sooners head into their first season in the SEC with a former 5-star recruit taking over at QB. Jackson Arnold will have a talented receiving corps, but there are questions about a revamped offensive line.
The defense is in great shape, returning 11 of their top 13 tacklers. The unit is anchored by linebacker Danny Stutsman who was the team’s leading tackler in 2023.
Brent Venables signed a six year contract extension this off-season, after leading the Sooners to 16-11 record the past two seasons. The bookmakers are not bullish on Oklahoma listing the odds at 5-1 to make the playoffs.
Relevant Trends
- The Owls are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games.
- The Owls are 0-14 SU in their last 14 games on the road.
- The total has gone OVER in 4 of Oklahoma’s last 5 games played in week 1.
- The Sooners are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games.
- The Owls are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games played in week 1.
PREDICTION: OKLAHOMA 51 – TEMPLE 13
The Sooners should have their way with Temple here, but that is certainly baked in to the line. We saw flashes of brilliance from QB Jackson Arnold in the Alamo Bowl, throwing for 361 yards and two TDs. He also threw three INTs and lost a fumble. Temple just doesn’t have the personnel to slow down the Sooners, the best bet might be on Oklahoma’s team total.

Oklahoma better enjoy this, because once they get a taste of a legit SEC schedule they are gonna throw up all over themselves. Venables is in for a rude awakening.
Temple is so bad it’s a disgrace to the AAC. This is going to be a massacre of epic proportions. I think the Sooners score 70.
