There’s no doubt that betting on sports is a tricky business, but there are plenty of tools that professional handicappers use to give them an added edge over the bookmaker. Some guys like to focus on situational handicapping, while others might use a contrarian approach.
Ricky Tran is primarily a “numbers guy”, with a keen eye for exploiting relevant trends and statistics. Ricky will tell you that finding hot trends is the easy part, the hard part is figuring out which of those trends to use, and which to ignore. Here are a few games that Ricky is looking at today:
1. NHL: Carolina Hurricanes vs. Ottawa Senators Under 5.5 – The UNDER is 9-2-1 in the last 12 meetings.
The Sens have the worst defense in the league allowing 3.1 goals per game, but the Canes are among the worst in the league for goals scored, particularly on the road where they average just 2.29 goals per game. Under is 5-2-5 in the Hurricanes last 12 road games while Ottawa has struggled for goals lately and is coming off a 2-1 shootout loss against the Sabres. Ricky Says: TAKE IT!
2. NHL: Dallas Stars vs. Arizona Coyotes – Under 5.5 – Under is 8-1-1 in the last 10 meetings in Arizona.
The Stars are off a 2-1 overtime loss at St. Louis Tuesday, but they’re entering Thursday’s round of games as the second highest scoring team in the league at 3.2 goals per game. The Coyotes defeated the Habs 6-2 Monday and the over is 6-2-3 in Coyotes last 11 home games vs. a team with a winning road record. They’re The 9-for-27 on the power play over the last six contests. It’s always a big risk to pick the under in games involving the Stars. Ricky Says: TOSS IT!
3. CBB: Wisconsin Badgers vs. Michigan State Spartans -10.5 – Spartans are 9-1 ATS in the last 9 meetings in Michigan St.
The Badgers beat the Spartans 77-76 on freshman forward Ethan Happ’s basket with 10 seconds left on Jan. 17. They’re the hottest team in the Big Ten as they’re going for an eighth consecutive victory and they’re a perfect 7-0 ATS in that span. Michigan State is also performing well with five victories in its last six games but this looks like too many points to cover. Ricky Says: TOSS IT!
